Breaking the News

Media Literacy Workshop Hosted by: The First Act News finds us everywhere: on Instagram, WhatsApp, television, articles, newspapers, and even opinion reels. Today, children are growing up in a digital world where information comes at them from every direction, with misinformation, disinformation, and AI-altered content increasingly woven into what they consume. Because of this, it becomes an essential skill to make sense of it, recognize different perspectives, and decide what deserves our trust. Breaking the News helps children look beyond the headlines and understand how the news they consume is created and shaped. Our Method: Children step into the shoes of reporters and investigate a news event through fun roleplay and interactive challenges. They uncover different perspectives and explore their choices about what to include, leave out, and how that can shape the public narrative. What They Will Leave With: Children will: - Learn to recognise misinformation, propaganda, disinformation and AI-altered content. - Build the habit of questioning, comparing sources, and looking for evidence before forming an opinion. - Understand how media representation shapes what we see as important or unimportant. - Build curiosity about current affairs and the world around them. Who Should Attend: This workshop is ideal for parents who want their child to: - Learn to read and engage with news critically, not passively. - Build news and media literacy in an increasingly digital world. - Understand how different perspectives can shape the way we see an issue. - Develop the habit of questioning information, seeking evidence, and thinking for themselves. - Become more thoughtful and informed participants in the world around them.
