How does quantum physics help big machines unravel the mysteries of life?
Life is organised in a hierarchy, from atoms and molecules to organelles, cells, tissues, organs, populations, ecosystems, and ultimately the biosphere. At the heart of this intricate organisation lie molecules, whose structures, interactions, and changes shape the evolution of organisms and influence health and disease. Yet, understanding these tiny building blocks of life is no small feat. It requires extraordinarily sophisticated scientific instruments, some of which are so large that they span hundreds of meters or even kilometres. In this lecture, Vinoth will explore how these large scientific machines, relying on quantum physics, reveal the molecular processes that sustain life and influence health and disease.
